As promised here are my favourite hardcore exfoliators, these are not for the faint hearted & if you aren’t used to a lot of exfoliation, don’t go guns a blazing and start using them every day. Listen to your skin & use them when you feel the need as I did notice with my skin it got addicted to exfoliation & if I didn’t do it everyday, my skin got really rough.
DERMAdoctor Physical Chemistry rrp $75 US
I know a lot of exfoliators claim to be like micro-dermabrasion which is totally BS in my opinion but this one is definitely the closest! This scrub claims to be the first single-step, high-potency multiacid chemical peel and microdermabrasion treatment in one. I’m not sure if i’d go that far, but it’s a bloody good scrub, one of the best actually. It contains Glycolic, Lactic, Azelaic and Beta Hydroxy Acids to break down the glue holding the dead skin cells together along with Synthetic Polymer Microdermabrading Beads to help buff away the debris. This is one hardcore scrub so go easy with it and enjoy its awesomeness.
To be honest, I could probably still use this scrub as it’s the most gentle out of the 5 here, also because it’s a powder that you add into your cleanser, you can control it’s scrubby-ness. This one is purely a manual scrub and contains a blend of ground Tea Tree Leaves, crushed Nut Shells and Purified Clays.
This exfoliator is similar to the DERMAdoctors scrub in that it is both a chemical & manual scrub but the difference here is that it warms up when used on damp skin which helps open & purify the pores. It’s not as intense as the DERMAdoctors so it’s a good option if you are scurred (don’t be) or want the warming sensation (why did that sound just a little bit dirty?).
St. Ives Naturally Clear Green Tea Scrub rrp $9.95
This is an awesome cheapie option, it contains salicylic acid, green tea & silica beads so you get manual & chemical exfoliation. This one is awesome because it’s pretty much pure grit so if you hate fillers in your scrubs & just want the scrubby bits this one is for you. The best way to use this is to apply on slightly damp skin, srub for a few seconds then leave it on the skin for a minute or so to allow the salicylic acid to work it’s magic then scrub again & rinse.
I’m sure most of you have heard about Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub right? Well this is it’s often forgotten about sister. To be honest I hated the 7 Day Scrub, it was supposed to be a rinse off formula but it always felt like it left a film on my skin and as someone prone to oiliness I hated that feeling. This scrub is way more intense & doesn’t have the creamy base like the 7 Day Scrub, it’s just pure grit (can you see a theme here). It’s supposed to be for more oilier skins but I think everyone apart from sensitive skins can use it as it does contain menthol which can irritate some skin types. If you want maximum scrubby power, apply this product to dry skin & use damp fingers to work the product on your skin. Actually that’s probably my no.1 tip to enhance the scrubby power of exfoliants, you can do it with pretty much any exfoliators and you will find you have to use less product as water isn’t dispersing the product. Just don’t do that if your skin is sensitive, it will make your skin cry.
